Conference Agenda  Meet Our Speakers

Since 2000, the AGAG Annual Conference has provided a unique benefit to the social sector as one of the few regular meetings with an international reach designed specifically for funders who support initiatives targeting Africa. This annual convening is designed to be a conversation among peers and an opportunity for funders to reinforce their personal commitment to philanthropy while sharing, learning. and building professional relationships.

Last year’s Annual Conference was the first in a three-part series exploring the theme, “Disrupting Silos, Connecting Conversations, Creating Impact.” This theme was chosen as a call to action to:

  • connect the conversations between funders inside and outside of Africa
  • disrupt sector-specific approaches and silo perspectives
  • build relationships that create more impact

The 2018 Annual Conference discussed a range of issues and laid the ground for exploring the question of why funders use certain grantmaking strategies and approaches in their funding targeting Africa.

The second in this conference series, “Part II: Exploring the Why”  will use the same theme to frame the discussions about the thinking behind grantmaking decisions.  In examing the different issues, we will encourage participants to explore their assumptions and expectations and understand how they influence the strategies used in their approach to philanthropy. During the conference, we will share the results from the 2018 Survey of Africa Funders launched in November and invite conference participants to suggest questions to include in our follow-up stakeholder interviews.

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • How Philanthropy Shapes the Narrative About Africa
  • Block Chain Technology and Philanthropy: What’s on the Horizon?
  • Results from the 2018 Survey of Africa Funders
  • The Growth of Donor Advised Funds: Implications for Africa

The interactive format will include:

Plenary sessions that explore cross-cutting topics relevant to all funders interested in Africa.

  • Campfire sessions that engage participants in small group discussions.
  • Lunch conversations that provide an informal space to discuss hot topics and new initiatives.
  • Networking breaks where participants can continue their conversations.
  • Opening Networking Reception at the end of the first day where participants can relax and talk informally with colleagues.

Why Attend?

  • Be exposed to a diverse community of funders you might not encounter elsewhere.
  • Experience a unique opportunity for sharing, learning, and listening.

  • Understand how your funding fits within the broader landscape of philanthropy targeting Africa.
