Women and Community Engagement: Lessons Learned

ADWFlogoThe African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) makes grants to organizations that are led by women and working to improve the lives of African women. It has supported organizations in over 40 African countries. During the Ebola crisis in West Africa one of the issues that emerged was the important role that local organizations played despite the lack of recognition and support they received. AGAG joined with other philanthropy organizations to urge more support for local organizations

AWDF was one of the few sources of support for women involved in formal and informal efforts to save their families and communities from the ravages of Ebola.  Chuku Emeka Chikezi‘s  article “Ebola: Local Efforts Were Key In Sierra Leone” posted on the Journalist reminds us of one of the lessons learned from Ebola that has implications for other situations including the threat of the Zika virus – ” keeping it local pays off.”    A lesson that AWDF understands.
