Championing the Environment: Global Greengrants Fund

The Global Greengrants Fund (GGF) supports the efforts of communities to protect and restore their environments. GGF believes that solutions to environmental harm and social injustice come directly from those whose lives are affected.

Since 1993, Global Greengrants Fund has made more than $71 million in grants to groups in 168 countries. GGF has been at the forefront in supporting efforts to protect the planet and the rights of people led by grassroots organizations.  GGF has supported organizations that created new marine conservation areas in Chile, stopped construction of mega-dams in Peru, passed new forest protection laws in Mongolia and established bans on plastic bags in Uganda and deadly herbicides in China. 

The Global Greengrants model of grantmaking was designed to help them find and invest in ideas with minimal bureaucracy. Their funding decisions are guided by their network of volunteers who understand the issues, organizations, and communities where they work. Using this model enables GGF to support communities in remote areas who often have little access to support from other funding sources.
