AGAG Legacy Project (ALP)

In October 2022, AGAG announced its Final Chapter. In concluding its external activities AGAG seeks to catalyze a new era in philanthropy targeting Africa and encourage the founding of a new entity with a fresh vision and approach to leveraging philanthropic resources for impact in African communities. There is no doubt that AGAG’s departure will create a gap in the Africa funding community. However, AGAG is confident that a new entity that is relevant and responsive to this new context will emerge and encourage its formation.

AGAG began working on the AGAG Legacy Project (ALP) to ensure that the information from its two decades of work are available to the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors. The ALP will draw from AGAG’s curated archives to produce oral histories, stakeholder interviews, and highlight keystone publications. These print and digital products will serve as a resource for the next generation of grantmaking practitioners to help improve their practices and impact and promote scholarship about the history of philanthropy.

The Story of AGAG

The ALP includes two documentary podcasts about the AGAG’s work and impact. Creating Community explores the events that prompted AGAG’s formation and the people, discussions, and research that shaped its evolution. Challenging Narratives and Practices explores the impact of AGAG’s work to improve philanthropic practices related to funding in Africa. In both we hear from noted philanthropy professionals who where part of the network. They share how AGAG became a community where they gained a deeper understanding of their individual and collective roles, and engaged in an ongoing process of creating community.
