Global Hunger Index: Africa Report

2016 - PDF - The NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NEPAD Agency) has collaborated with the International Food Policy Research Institute  (IFPRI), Regional Strategic Analysis Knowledge Support System (ReSAKSS), Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe in launching the Global Hunger Index (GHI): Africa Report.

This report illustrates a multidimensional measure of global hunger which IFPRI has tracked for the past 11 years. Tracking the state of hunger across Africa and spotlighting regions where action is needed most is a phenomenal development to help encourage responsive philanthropy.   

Hunger levels for the report were calculated based on four indicators:

  • Undernourishment: the proportion of undernourished people as a percentage of the population, reflecting the share of the population whose caloric intake is insufficient.

  • Child wasting: the proportion of children under the age of 5 who suffer from wasting, that is, low weight for their height, reflecting acute undernutrition.

  • Child stunting: the proportion of children under the age of 5 who suffer from stunting, that is, low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition.

  • Child mortality: the mortality rate of children under the age of 5, partially reflecting the fatal synergy of inadequate nutrition and unhealthy environments.

The report shows the varying progress between countries in Africa while indicating that the overall level of hunger in all countries across the continent has declined since 2000. 

The IFPRI reminds us that the Zero Hunger Challenge, presented by the United Nations, can only be achieved when governments take full accountability for its citizens by requiring an active collection and analysis of data paired with open and comprehensive review and dialogue.
