Journey to Equality: 10 Years of the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa

2013 - PDF - In February 2006, when a 13 year-old Zambian school girl was raped by her teacher, the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Protocol) was one of the tools that facilitated justice. This 2013 publication commemorates the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa with a series of essays that address the question of, 10 years after the Protocol’s adoption, are African women better off? 

Although this publication is by no means a comprehensive review of progress at the national and regional levels, it seeks to provide an evaluation of progress made in various countries and across the region in implementing particular provisions. It highlights best practices of both member States and CSOs promoting the Protocol, examines gaps and challenges in implementation, and makes recommendations for future action.
